History of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Sweden

In October 1918 the Government of the Ukrainian State "in order to establish permanent diplomatic relations between the Government of the Kingdom of Sweden and the Government of the Ukrainian State, as well as aiming to establish friendly connections and mutual understanding between our two great nations", sent a diplomatic Mission to the Scandinavian countries headed by Borys Bazhenov. Borys Bazhenov settled down in the best hotel of Stockholm "The Grand Hotel", which still functions on Södra Blasieholmshamnen, 8. This address appears as the first location of the diplomatic Mission, accordingly. Later the Mission was located in the hotel "Regina" on Drottninggatan, 42-44.

In January 1919 the Directory decided to appoint Kostyantyn Losskyi (2) as the head of the Mission. Since his arrival in Stockholm in late February - early March the Mission relocated to Drottninggatan, 83 and the head of the Mission lived in apartment on Karlbergsvägen, 43b. Starting from October 1, 1919 to February 1920, this address was shared with the office of the Mission.


On December 19, 1991 the Kingdom of Sweden has recognized the independence of Ukraine and on January 13, 1992 an agreement between Ukraine and the Kingdom of Sweden on establishing diplomatic relations was concluded.


Diplomatic Mission of Ukraine in Stockholm headed by Kostyantyn Masyk the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Finland and part-time to the Kingdom of Sweden (appointed by the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 501/92 October 16, 1992) was launched on May 31, 1994 at Markvardsgatan, 5. Kostyantyn Masyk handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden on March 11, 1993.

By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 715/97 on July 28, 1997 Ihor Podolev was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Sweden. On September 15, 1997 Ihor Podolev handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 39/99 on January 20, 1999 Oleksandr Slipchenko was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Sweden. On February 11, 1999 Oleksandr Slipchenko handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

On October 1, 1999 Embassy moved to another location on Stockholmsvägen, 18 on the suburbs of Stockholm (Lidingö) and on April 1, 2001 – to the current premises on Stjärnvägen, 2a.

 By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 1027/2002 on November 14, 2002 Leonid Kozhara was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Sweden. On April 23, 2003 Leonid Kozhara handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 1038/2006 on December 6, 2006 Anatolii Ponomarenko was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Sweden. On February 22, 2007 Anatolii Ponomarenko handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. On May 20, 2008 he died prematurely.

By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 777/2008 on August 29, 2008 Yevhen Perebyinis was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Sweden. On September 4, 2008 Yevhen Perebyinis handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 1044/2011 on November 11, 2011 Valerii Stepanov was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Sweden. On March 8, 2012 Valerii Stepanov handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

By the Decree of the President of Ukraine № 151/2015 on March 19, 2015 Ihor Sagach was appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Sweden. On June 4, 2015 Ihor Sagach handed the Credentials to H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

[1] Borys Bazhenov was born on July 13, 1871 in Kharkiv. He graduated from the 2nd Moscow Cadet Corps and in 1891 from the Nicholas equestrian school. He served in the 35th Belgorod Dragoon Regiment. In 1898 he graduated from Nicholas Academy of the General Staff in St. Petersburg (the first category, was awarded a small silver medal with his name written on a marble slab). After that he served as a member of a senior staff in the 2nd Guards Cavalry Division, senior officer for special assignments of the Petersburg military district. During six years (starting from May 4, 1907 to July 30, 1913) he was the chief of staff of the 1st Guards Cavalry Division holding the rank of colonel. In 1913 he received the rank of major-general and was appointed as a chief of military communications of the St. Petersburg military district. During the First World War - the quartermaster-general of the 6th army at Romanian Front, the chief of staff of the 42nd army corps.

 
[2] Kostyantyn Losskyi was born on January 28, 1874 in St. Petersburg, lawyer, social and political activist, writer and publicist. Pioneer of the Holmshina national revival: in 1905 founded the "Prosvita" in Hrubieshov and publication of Ukrainian popular books, co-editor of the "Bug" newspaper.  In 1917-1918 by the proposition of Dmytro Doroshenko he was appointed as a county commissioner in Buchach, assistant to the Galicia-Bukovina provincial commissioner, member of the Central Council (Tsentralna Rada), head of internal affairs department at the Secretariat General, later head of the department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that, in fact, the Ministry as it was. After the division of the Ministry into two departments Kostyantyn Losskyi remained as the head of general department which covered the internal organizational issues of the Ministry. In 1918-1919 he worked as Ukrainian Ambassador to Finland (Embassy in Finland was established by law on September 15, 1918 as the Embassy of the 2nd category), later - to Sweden. Since 1920 in emigration he devoted himself mainly to research activities. He was a professor of Roman law of Ukrainian free university, member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. He died in Prague on October 14, 1933.
