Regional cooperation of Ukraine and Sweden




Regional cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden has been developing actively over the recent years. Worth to note the cooperation between twin cities: Kyiv and Stockholm, Luhansk and Vansbro, Khmelnytsky and Kramfors.

Ukrainian cities Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa and Kharkiv are cooperating with the Swedish counterparts such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo within the regional cooperation network EUROCITIES. Association of Ukraine's cities and communities has developed partnership with the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions.

The energy sphere is a priority within Ukainian-Swedish regional cooperation. The delegations of Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Odessa oblast state administrations visited Sweden to get familiar with Swedish experience in the field of energy saving, energy consumption and usage of alternative energy sources. Swedish companies Alfa Laval, ABB participate in a number of projects on modernization of heat supply systems using energy efficient technologies in Rivne, Ternopil, Lubny as well as in the Crimea. Representatives of Swedish companies Eco-Energy and BiogasProm signed a memorandum of intentions for cooperation with Ukrainian municipalities Lutsk, Myrgorod, Novograd Volynskij, Nova Kakhovka, Konotop etc.

A number of meetings took place between the representatives of Ukrainian municipalities and Swedish association of local authorities and regions, Swedish international development agency, Swedish national board of tourism etc. Specific areas of bilateral cooperation were discussed during the meetings in 2011. The visit of Deputy Governors from 21 regions of Ukraine to Sweden in the framework of the UN Development Programme was of great importance for development of regional cooperation.

In June 2011 the delegation of Kherson region visited Kristianstad during the opening ceremony of the sculpture to the author of the first Ukrainian constitution Filip Orlyck. In July 2011 the representatives of Kherson oblast attended the Swedish province of Skåne in order to establish interregional cooperation in agricultural sector, particularly in cultivation of environmentally friendly agricultural products and baby food production.
